In 1992, Bruce Springsteen sang "57 channels (and Nothin' On)". Fast forward more than 15 years later, and the number of channels has multiplied, and no matter what your interests are, you're likely to find something worth watching. The main networks continue to soldier on, although cable television and the Internet have stolen market share. Niche cable channels target programming for comedy, sports, music and drama fans. Writers' strikes over the past few years have given a boost to reality television, which has earned a permanent place among TV genres. Whether you're a fan of network television shows like Ugly Betty or Heroes, or cable hits like The Wire or Weeds, or even vintage shows like Star Trek that are long off the air, Philo Farnsworth's brainchild's detractors are far outnumbered by its fans.
