Joe Schmoe is not a real person, but if he did exist, he would consider himself an aficionado of the American political process. He is a registered Independent, but has voted Republican since 1992. For 2008, he is undecided but is leaning towards McCain, whose no-nonsense approach seems appealing compared to the messianic hoopla surrounding Barack Obama.

Even though there's been considerable resentment towards "Hollywood elites" foisting their political opinions on the American electorate, the fact that politicians court celebrity endorsements and tout them when received points to a perceived net benefit.
