  • Did Obama deserve the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize?

The Nobel Peace Prize is to be awarded to an individual who, in the previous year, worked to promote friendship or brotherhood among nations, trying to reduce the amount of foreign armies on nations' soils, and one who sought to bring peace in the world.  Did Obama really do this throughout 2008?  No, he was on the campaign trail which left him little time to promote world peace.  Was he trying to be bipartisan here in America and bring different socio-economic statuses together in bringing hope to a better American government?  I think so, but that has nothing to do with promoting global peace nor did he do anything that would remotely give him the credibility to have been nominated for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.  Maybe one day, but not now!

  • Will a lengthened school day and school year close the achievement gap?

President Obama has introduced the idea of lengthening the school year (shortening summer break) as well as the school day in order to close the achievement gap that is evident between minorities and caucasian students.  President Obama also is suggesting that our public schools be opened on weekends in order to provide a safe haven for kids who may otherwise be enticed to join gangs and get into trouble.  These ideas are being brought forth as possible legislation in order to close the achievement gap and ensure that all American students will be able to globally compete against countries like Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, etc.
